Weight Loss 101
GLP-1 injections are a type of medication that mimics the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1. These medications are used for weight loss as well as for managing type 2 diabetes. Here's how they work and their benefits:
How does it work?
GLP-1 receptors in the brain influence appetite and food intake. When these receptors are activated, they promote a feeling of fullness, leading to reduced hunger and lower calorie intake. This medication slows down the rate at which the stomach empties food into the intestines. This prolongs the feeling of fullness after eating. GLP-1 medication stimulates the pancreas to release insulin in response to meals, helping to regulate blood sugar levels. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Clinical trials have shown that GLP-1 agonists, such as Liraglutide, Tirzepatide, and Semaglutide can lead to significant weight loss when combined with lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. By reducing hunger and helping people feel full sooner and longer, these medications make it easier to adhere to a calorie-restricted diet. Weight loss achieved through GLP-1 injections can improve various metabolic parameters, including blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, and blood pressure.
What are all the different injection options:
With the success of using GLP-1 medication for weight loss, there are a few options when it comes to getting your medication. While Habit does not offer the option of going through insurance to get your medication, we do recommend talking to your PCP to discuss your options first. If you know that your insurance will not cover this medication for you we would be happy to schedule a consultation with our Nurse Practitioner, Jacqueline. While we do not take insurance, we do however accept HSA and FSA payments for these appointments.
What is the difference between the name-brand medication and what you offer?
Name-brand GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy, Saxenda, Ozempic, and Monjouro are produced by big pharmacy companies. Because these drugs have become so popular with their increasing success rate for weight loss there has become a shortage of them. We ethically source our medication through compounding pharmacies located in the United States. Compounding pharmacies can formulate this medication at a much cheaper rate. While the FDA regulates name-brand drug companies, they do not regulate compounding pharmacies to the same extent. Making it not only more affordable but more readily available.
