Your Official Guide to Your Skincare Routine

A proper skincare routine typically consists of individual steps, and the specific products and order may vary depending on your skin type and concerns. Remember that your skincare routine can be as basic as three products (cleanser, SPF, and serum) or as advanced as you would like to make it. We want to stick to four basic steps to remember the order in which we apply our products:

  1. Cleanse: use a face wash to cleanse your skin.

  2. Treat: use different serums to help treat various skin conditions.

  3. Moisturize: use a moisturizer to prevent your skin from drying out.

  4. Protect: use SPF to protect your skin from the sun.

However, here's a step-by-step skincare routine that you can follow:

  1. Cleansing: Start by cleansing your face to remove dirt, makeup, and impurities. Use a gentle, sulfate-free cleanser that matches your skin type (e.g., oily, dry, sensitive). Be sure to double cleanse at night.

  2. Toning (optional): Some people like to use a toner after cleansing to balance the skin's pH and provide additional hydration. Toners can be especially helpful if you have oily skin.

  3. Serum: Apply a serum with active ingredients tailored to your skin concerns. Serums can contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid for hydration, vitamin C for brightening, or retinol for anti-aging. Let the serum absorb before moving on to the next step.

  4. Eye Cream (optional): If you have specific concerns around the eyes, such as dark circles or puffiness, apply an eye cream. Gently pat it around the orbital bone using your ring finger.

  5. Moisturizer: A moisturizer locks in moisture and hydrates your skin. Again, choose a product suitable for your skin type (e.g., a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer for oily skin or a richer one for dry skin).

  6. Sunscreen (AM only): In the morning, finish your routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Sunscreen helps protect your skin from UV damage and prevents premature aging.

  7. Exfoliation (1-2 times a week): Exfoliation can be done using physical exfoliants (scrubs) or chemical exfoliants (e.g., alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids). Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and can improve skin texture. Be cautious not to over-exfoliate, as this can irritate your skin.

  8. Masks (1-2 times a week): Use masks as needed based on your skin concerns. There are various types, including hydrating, clay, and sheet masks. Masks can provide a quick boost to your skincare routine.

Remember that consistency is key in skincare. It may take time to see significant results, and you should give each product a chance to work. Additionally, consult with your provider if you have specific skin concerns or conditions, as they can provide tailored advice and recommend appropriate products or treatments for your needs.
